Keyway Broaching: 3 Critical Tooling Checks

Keyway broaching requires a defined tool arrangement for a defined feature. Some keyway broaches work with bushings and shims, while particular one-pass or production tools have different accessory requirements. Identify the proposed family before comparing the tooling lists.

For an aluminum hub or similar component, send the machining provider the released drawing and material specification. Ask it to review the bore, keyway and available access together. Keep the starting blank and completed component as clearly named delivery stages.

Read the tool description before the accessory list

Pilot Precision’s duMONT keyway broach overview distinguishes several arrangements. Its conventional sets include broaches, slotted bushings and necessary shims. Its identified one-pass keyway tools use an appropriate bushing without shimming.

The manufacturer separately describes production push-type keyway broaches as self-supporting tools that require neither bushings nor shims. It also identifies pull-type tools for their corresponding machine arrangements.

These are different product descriptions. Obtain the tooling specialist’s reviewed selection for the actual material, geometry and equipment. An accessory absent from one family’s list does not establish that a different family’s list is incomplete.

The product names provide a useful first question: which exact arrangement has the provider selected? Retain the answer with the quotation so the tool, accessories and equipment are reviewed as a connected proposal.

1. Confirm which keyway broaching family is proposed

Ask the provider to name the exact tool or custom-tool proposal and the equipment arrangement. Keep that description with the drawing reference instead of reducing the offer to “keyway tool supplied.”

For a proposal involving a broach set, ask which items are included and how they relate to the selected feature. A photograph of a boxed set cannot establish the correct combination for your component.

For an identified one-pass proposal, ask the specialist to confirm the selected tool and applicable bushing together. Keep any stated meaning of “one pass” with that product’s reviewed application.

For a production or pull-type proposal, ask which machine and supplied tooling interface form part of the review. Avoid treating an equipment category as an automatic substitution for the named arrangement.

The manufacturer also distinguishes tools supplied in standard or custom configurations. If a custom proposal is needed, retain its approved tool drawing, part drawing and revision references in the purchasing record.

This guide provides no pressing sequence, shim thickness, cutting force or machine adjustment. Use the selected tool’s instructions and the responsible specialist’s reviewed process for the actual job.

2. Give the specialist the complete bore and keyway

Identify the component and its material condition first. An aluminum hub drawing should have its own reference rather than inherit a shaft’s machining note from the mating assembly.

Keep the bore dimensions, tolerances and delivery condition visible in the inquiry. Ask what starting bore the reviewed process requires and which party prepares it.

Describe whether the relevant opening passes through the component or has a closed end. Include the section view needed to show the available path and any adjacent shoulders or obstructions. The tooling specialist should identify any unresolved access issue.

Keep keyway width, depth definition, axial extent and location on the controlled drawing. Our keyway dimensions guide explains why a width alone leaves the complete interface undefined.

Add the required entry, exit and edge conditions where they form part of the released specification. If the provider proposes another end form or a relief feature, send that proposal to the responsible drawing owner for review.

Do not infer an accepted change from a catalog sketch. A sketch of a tool arrangement illustrates the product; the released component drawing defines what your order requires.

3. Compare the same completed scope

Ask each machining provider to map its offer to the same drawing and delivery stage. Include starting-stock preparation, bore preparation, the proposed keyway operation, required edge work and final inspection.

If you are buying tooling rather than machined parts, identify that supply scope separately. Tool design, accessories, application review and support should remain distinguishable from the production of the component itself.

A second provider may propose another machining route. Ask it to identify the features it will deliver and any change requiring approval. Our wire EDM versus milling guide discusses the broader question of matching individual features to a reviewed route.

Keep proposed prices and timing beside their included operations. An offer for a tool only and an offer for finished inspected components represent different deliverables.

A fictional comparison: why an empty accessory field needs context

Imagine two offers for a component review, record B37. Offer A names a conventional keyway broach set with a bushing and required shims. Offer B names a production push-type tool and lists no bushing or shims.

The record is an invented quotation example. It contains no selected duMONT product, actual machining result or JiurunCut equipment claim.

The buyer should first ask each provider to confirm the exact selected family and its reviewed application. It would be premature to mark Offer B incomplete solely because its accessory field differs from Offer A.

Resolve these fields in each fictional offer
Comparison field Question to resolve
Selected family Which exact broach arrangement has been reviewed?
Accessory scope Which accessories apply to that selected arrangement?
Prepared component Who provides the required bore and starting condition?
Delivered evidence Which drawing features and inspection records are included?

Once those fields are resolved, compare the full proposed deliverable. Keep any unapproved drawing or process change visible until the responsible team records its disposition.

Keep the sawn blank connected to the downstream drawing

A machined hub may begin as a sawn round-bar piece. Issue the cutting supplier’s actual blank requirements: material identity, stock section, required length, quantities and agreed end condition.

Keep any machining allowance on the approved blank drawing. The cutting supplier should be able to identify the required output without choosing the finished bore or keyway dimensions on the buyer’s behalf.

Our aluminum machining allowance guide addresses that blank-to-finished-part handoff. Retain sample identity and the operation stage through the review.

Send JiurunCut the approved aluminum stock and cutting list for a blank inquiry. Include the downstream drawing as context and identify the machining provider’s separate responsibility.

Questions about keyway broaching

Does every keyway broach need a bushing and shims?

The cited manufacturer identifies different arrangements with different accessory requirements. Read the selected tool family’s description and instructions.

Does a one-pass product name approve the entire component?

No. Confirm the reviewed tool application and the included preparation, finishing and inspection for the actual drawing.

Can a bore diameter select the complete process?

Provide the full feature geometry, material and access information. Have the tooling or machining specialist review the complete requirement.

Does this guide establish broaching capability for a JiurunCut saw?

No. Specify the sawn blank and downstream machining as their respective operations. Request evidence for the actual supplied configuration.
