PID vs on-off control describes how a controller responds to a measured process. Begin with the temperature point you want controlled, then compare the proposed method against the required response. The word “PID” alone does not specify the delivered system.
For an aluminum-processing project, keep the temperature-control scope beside the equipment quotation. Identify the sensor, controller, controlled equipment and agreed review conditions before comparing offers.
1. Understand PID vs on-off control
OMRON’s temperature-controller guide explains a controller as a device that compares a sensor signal with a set point. Its on-off example switches heating output between two states according to the measured value.
The guide describes proportional action as responding to deviation, integral action as responding to its size and duration, and derivative action as responding to changes. PID combines those three actions. The guide also connects system response to the characteristics of the controlled object.
Keep those definitions in mind when reading a quote. A proposal may name a controller that supports several modes without saying which mode is included in the delivered configuration.
Ask for the offered mode and the equipment it controls. Record any scope limitation beside that answer. A controller-only supply and a complete temperature-control package are different purchasing scopes.

2. Name the temperature point before selecting a method
Write down what the measurement represents. A liquid point, a housing surface and surrounding air describe different subjects. Give the required point an identifier and show its intended location.
Then identify the measurement path: sensor, any intervening device and controller input. Preserve the exact supplied references in the quotation.
Our RTD vs thermocouple guide addresses sensing-element and input identity. That choice should remain visible alongside the proposed control mode.
A display value is meaningful only when its subject is clear. Avoid comparing two controller screens as if they represent the same location when the suppliers describe different measurement points.
A simple fictional screen example
Suppose point T12 has a displayed target of 35°C and a reported reading of 33°C. The arithmetic difference is 2°C. These invented values identify a target and a reading; they do not supply an approved setting or operating limit.
The purchasing question is whether the supplier has named the intended point, its measurement arrangement and the control task. Those two numbers alone cannot answer the question.
3. Describe the response your process needs
Explain which event the review covers. Reaching a target after startup and returning to the required condition after a defined process change are different questions to put into the review brief.
Ask the responsible process team to identify any required observation period, reporting interval and permitted behavior. Keep that approved requirement in the quotation comparison.
Use words that have a shared meaning in the project. If a quote promises “fast response,” ask how the supplier proposes to demonstrate it under the agreed conditions.
If it promises “stable temperature,” identify the point, period and acceptance requirement behind that phrase. Retain the proposed evidence rather than replacing it with a general brochure statement.
A useful comparison records the same review conditions for each offer. Where conditions differ, show the difference and leave the decision open for the responsible reviewer.

Two fictional offers: what remains unresolved?
Offer A states “temperature controller with PID capability.” Offer B states “on-off temperature control at point T12.” Neither summary identifies all the information needed to review the supplied arrangement.
| Offer wording | Ask the supplier |
|---|---|
| A: PID capability | Which mode is actually supplied for the identified point? |
| B: On-off at T12 | Which sensor, input and controlled equipment are included? |
| Both: temperature control | Which agreed response conditions and evidence does the offer cover? |
The buyer sends the same point definition and review brief to both suppliers. Each supplier returns a scoped proposal with its supplied components and proposed evidence.
If one offer excludes the sensor or controlled equipment, retain that exclusion in the comparison. Do not rank the packages as complete equivalents merely because each includes a temperature-controller line.
These offers are invented document examples. They contain no real controller performance, quoted JiurunCut option or approved installation arrangement.
4. Keep the delivered configuration traceable
At handover, connect the point identifier to the actual supplied device references and controlled equipment. Retain the approved drawing and configuration records specified for the project.
Identify who supplies each part of the loop. Clarify who reviews the application and who provides the agreed demonstration records.
Keep configuration changes within the approved controls workflow. A purchasing comparison should not become an instruction to copy parameters from another machine.
Also distinguish a control requirement from an alarm or protective-function requirement. Ask the responsible team to identify each task and its documentation in the actual system design.
Where a separate surface-temperature study is involved, our aluminum infrared temperature guide explains the observation records to retain. Keep that study identifiable within the wider process review.

Common questions
Does PID capability mean PID is configured?
Ask for the actual supplied mode and its identified point. A feature listed in a controller’s documentation does not describe every delivered configuration.
Can I compare controllers using the displayed target alone?
Keep the measurement point, input path, controlled equipment and required response with the target. The target number does not describe the full package.
Can settings from one system be copied to another?
Have the responsible controls team review the actual application and approved configuration. This purchasing guide supplies no tuning values.
Make the equipment scope clear
Send JiurunCut your aluminum cutting brief with the drawing and production mix. If the wider project has a temperature-control integration requirement, identify its point, responsibility and documentation scope in the inquiry.
