NPT vs BSP: 4 Easy Air-Fitting Checks

NPT vs BSP is a thread-identification question when ordering a machine air connection, valve or replacement fitting. A familiar inch-size label does not establish a compatible connection. Start with the exact port and component reference, then confirm the thread family and the complete sealing arrangement.

This guide helps buyers prepare a clearer parts request. It does not identify the ports on a JiurunCut model or provide instructions for opening, modifying or pressurizing a pneumatic circuit.

The quick NPT vs BSP distinction

Swagelok’s identification guide lists NPT as tapered with a 60° thread angle, BSPT as tapered with a 55° angle, and BSPP as parallel with a 55° angle. Clarify which family the order requires.

Keep these names in the parts request. A description such as “quarter-inch air fitting” needs the actual thread designation and mating connection before it becomes an orderable item.

Check 1: locate the two ends being joined

Give the connection an identity before comparing fittings. Is the request for the machine inlet, a valve port, a hose end or a supplied adapter? Record the component reference and position on the available documentation. A close-up is useful alongside that record, but should not replace it.

Describe both ends of an adapter separately. A supplier may correctly identify its machine-side thread while leaving the hose-side connection unspecified. Matching one end does not complete the purchase review.

Also separate the threaded port from the tube or hose connection. If a quote gives both a tubing size and a thread size, keep their labels. Do not transfer the tubing dimension into the port field because the numbers look familiar.

For a new machine order, ask which connection items are included and which are supplied by the site. Our compressed-air quotation guide covers the wider utility boundary. Here, the aim is to resolve the particular mechanical interface within that boundary.

Check 2: read the full thread description

Ask the supplier to preserve the stated standard, size, thread type and male or female end. If the paperwork says only BSP, request the complete component drawing or product designation rather than choosing a suffix yourself.

Swagelok’s guide separates thread identification from end-connection identification. Its sequence checks geometry and pitch before the complete connection. Request the whole product record, not one caliper number.

Why the same pitch can still leave a question

The guide lists 1/2-inch NPT and ISO 7/1 entries at 14 threads per inch and warns that some NPT and BSPT threads are difficult to distinguish. The shared pitch is not a statement that the two systems are interchangeable.

For purchasing, retain uncertain identification as an open item. Ask the responsible supplier or service provider to confirm it from the documented component or an appropriate identification review. Do not turn “appears close” into “approved substitute” in the stock database.

Check 3: confirm the complete seal and supply scope

The guide shows that parallel threaded connections can use gaskets, O-rings or mating metal surfaces for sealing. It also presents different end-connection designs under the same ISO 228/1 thread family. A matching thread label alone does not describe every sealing feature.

Ask for the relevant connection drawing and the specified sealing item with its part reference. Write whether that item is included, supplied separately or already part of the approved assembly. Follow the component manufacturer’s actual documentation for the application.

Keep identification separate from operating approval. The connection’s permitted service conditions and the machine’s required air supply belong in their own confirmed documentation. A seller’s general category page does not approve an unidentified assembly for a particular installation.

When an alternative fitting is proposed, request a complete comparison. Identify which ordered item it replaces, which two interfaces it joins, and what changes in the supplied scope. Have the responsible technical owner approve that specific substitution before purchasing releases it.

A fictional quotation exchange

Imagine a buyer requests a “1/2-inch BSP adapter.” One offer describes a BSPT end; another describes a BSPP end. Their headlines look similar, but the buyer has not yet supplied enough information to select either one.

The useful reply is to provide the actual component reference and both mating-end requirements, then ask each seller to state its complete offered item. This is a documentation example, not a recommendation for any machine port or an installation instruction.

Check 4: make the ordered fitting traceable at receipt

Keep the approved offered reference with the purchase order. Receiving should be able to compare the delivered label and supplied items against that reference, without recreating the selection from a photograph.

A compact record can contain:

  • The machine or component reference and connection position.
  • The confirmed designation for each mating end.
  • The offered fitting reference and approved revision.
  • The specified seal or associated item and its supply responsibility.
  • The person responsible for the compatibility decision.

If a marking or delivered item differs, record the discrepancy and return it to the approval owner. Avoid using an attempted fit as the receiving decision. Keep unresolved items separate from parts released for the documented installation work.

Our spare-parts request guide explains how to connect a replacement request with machine identity. Combining that identity with a complete fitting reference makes later reorders easier.

Common NPT vs BSP questions

Does BSP always mean a tapered thread?

No. Clarify whether the specified item uses BSPT, BSPP or another explicitly documented connection. Keep the complete manufacturer designation.

Can a similar diameter or matching pitch settle compatibility?

Those observations do not describe the complete thread and sealing interface. Preserve the actual product reference and obtain the responsible supplier’s confirmation.

What should I send with an air-connection inquiry?

Send the machine identity, documented connection position, available port or component reference, and the site-side interface information. State which fitting or adapter you need supplied.

Contact JiurunCut with your machine and connection records. Keep the NPT vs BSP question tied to the actual ordered configuration so the reply can address a defined interface.
