Wave Spring vs Coil Spring: 3 Critical Fit Checks

A wave spring vs coil spring comparison should start with the required load at the working height and the actual assembly space. A smaller-looking spring is not automatically an approved substitute.

For an aluminum housing, compare the selected spring documents with the housing drawing. Keep the spring’s free size, compressed condition and surrounding component dimensions separate. The buying question is whether the proposed combination meets the approved assembly requirement.

Wave spring vs coil spring: two designs, one requirement

Lee Spring’s compression-spring guide describes an open-coil helical spring that resists axial compression. Its spring rate expresses the change in load for each unit of deflection, such as N/mm.

Smalley’s wave-spring guide describes a flat-wire compression design with multiple waves per turn. It distinguishes free height without load from working height at a specified load.

Use those terms consistently in the quotation. Ask each supplier to identify the offered spring and provide its applicable drawing and load information. A proposal for a spring family is less specific than a proposal for an identified component.

Keep the spring selection with the responsible assembly designer. A housing drawing and a spring catalog entry need to be reviewed together. The examples here do not identify an installed spring in a JiurunCut machine.

Check 1: compare load at the working height

For a wave spring vs coil spring proposal, ask what load the assembly needs and at which installed height. Record the applicable load tolerance and operating range from the approved requirement.

Consider an original fictional linear spring. Assume its unloaded length is 15 mm and its rate is a constant 2 N/mm over the example’s range. At an installed length of 9 mm, the deflection is 15 − 9 = 6 mm. With zero load at the unloaded state in this simplified model, the resulting load is 2 × 6 = 12 N.

Fictional installed length Result in the assumed linear model
10 mm 5 mm deflection; 10 N load
9 mm 6 mm deflection; 12 N load
8 mm 7 mm deflection; 14 N load

The numbers show why installed length matters. They do not establish an actual spring’s load curve, permitted travel, stress, service life or suitability. Do not use them to select a real spring.

A replacement could have a different free height and still be proposed for the same required load at a particular working height. Obtain its actual load-height information. Matching only the unloaded length would leave the assembly requirement unresolved.

Ask how the supplier will document the specified load and working height for the offered component. Keep the evidence tied to its part identity and revision. A single advertised force without a height reference is difficult to compare with another quotation.

Check 2: review the aluminum cavity and surrounding parts

In a wave spring vs coil spring review, the assembly space includes more than an axial length. Identify the relevant cavity, guiding features and adjacent parts on the housing drawing. Have the designer review the complete interface.

Lee Spring distinguishes a spring’s outside diameter from the mating hole diameter, and a spring’s inside diameter from the guiding rod diameter. Its guide discusses tolerances and expansion under load when reviewing those mating dimensions.

A buyer should therefore avoid copying a spring’s outside diameter into the housing’s hole-size field. The component dimension and the mating-part requirement describe different things. Use the approved drawing for each.

Record whether the quotation covers only a spring or also a revised housing. If an offered alternative changes the cavity, make that change visible before comparing the total assemblies. Keep the revised housing number and drawing revision alongside the proposed spring.

A smaller cavity needs an identified design change

Smalley’s substitution guidance explains that realizing a wave spring’s space benefit requires designing it into the application and addressing the spring cavity. Treat a supplier’s proposed change as an assembly review.

This guide gives no fixed space-saving percentage for your housing. Ask for the actual before-and-after drawings and selected components. An advertised comparison does not establish the dimensions, cost or performance of the offered assembly.

When the outside of the housing must remain compatible with another machine part, identify that requirement too. The designer should be able to see which dimensions may change and which interfaces must continue to meet the approved drawing.

Check 3: retain the permitted operating range

For wave spring vs coil spring selection, read the proposed load-height information with the permitted operating limits. Smalley’s guide notes that excessive compression can produce permanent set and affect predictable force.

Lee Spring separately defines solid height as the condition where a compression spring’s coils are pressed together. Do not treat that geometric endpoint as a universal recommended working condition.

Ask the spring supplier and assembly designer to review the required travel, load range and intended conditions. Keep their applicable limits with the component documents. A spring that fits into an unloaded photograph has not demonstrated suitability throughout the intended motion.

If a later revision changes the installed height, return to the spring review. In the fictional model, changing 9 mm to 8 mm changes the calculated load from 12 N to 14 N. A real component requires its own data and approved limits rather than the invented linear relationship.

Read the quotation as an assembly proposal

Keep one clear package: the housing drawing, offered spring identity, required load-height condition and documented review of the complete interface. Identify which party approves the spring and which party supplies the housing.

If the spring changes, request a revised package before carrying the earlier approval forward. Make substitutions traceable. Do not leave an old spring reference attached to the new cavity drawing.

Wave spring vs coil spring questions

Does matching free height prove interchangeability?

No. Compare the required load at working height and the complete component interface.

Is the housing hole diameter the spring diameter?

No. One is a mating-part dimension. Review both drawings with the designer.

Is solid height the normal operating height?

Use the selected spring’s applicable operating limits. Do not infer a recommendation from the geometric endpoint.
