ISO VG Viscosity Grades: 4 Critical Oil-Order Checks

ISO VG viscosity grades help buyers read a lubricant’s viscosity classification. The number is useful when checking a maintenance quotation, but it belongs beside the complete approved oil specification, the exact product and the component being serviced.

For an aluminum-cutting shop, a clear lubricant order reduces ambiguity between purchasing, stores and maintenance. Start with the equipment record. Then compare the oil supplier’s current technical sheet with that requirement before releasing the order.

ISO VG viscosity grades: read the reference condition

The ISO classification describes kinematic viscosity at 40°C. The grade number represents a midpoint, with a band extending 10% below and above it. ExxonMobil Chemical’s lubricant guide explains this in section 9.3.2.

Carry the reference temperature with any viscosity value in your comparison sheet. A supplier’s value needs its test condition to be useful. Keep the supplier’s original units and wording rather than copying a bare number into the purchase description.

Also keep the classification separate from the full equipment requirement. A brief line such as “oil, grade 46” leaves important purchasing questions unresolved: which product, for which component, under which approved maintenance specification?

If the technical sheet lists several viscosity properties, retain each property’s label. The dynamic and kinematic viscosity guide addresses that different comparison. Do not join two columns merely because both contain the word viscosity.

Read one viscosity example correctly

For ISO VG 46, the midpoint is 46 cSt at 40°C. Ten percent is 4.6 cSt, giving a lower boundary of 41.4 and an upper boundary of 50.6 cSt at that temperature. This is a classification example, not a recommendation for a particular saw.

Now imagine a supplier’s technical sheet showing 45.7 cSt at 40°C. That fictional value lies inside the illustrated band. The arithmetic answers a narrow question about a listed property; it does not approve the oil for your equipment or establish a delivered batch result.

The next review needs the complete product specification. Record the technical sheet’s revision, the exact product designation and the equipment approval or written substitution decision. Ask the responsible technical reviewer to resolve any missing item.

Useful distinction: “fits the illustrated viscosity band” and “approved for this component” belong in separate cells of a review. A positive answer in the first cell should not fill the second automatically.

Build an oil order the receiving team can use

A useful order connects the requirement to a named product and a named destination inside the equipment record. Give stores enough detail to recognize the delivered item without interpreting a machine photograph.

The following fictional example concerns a maintenance request labelled L-19. It is an original purchasing exercise, with no assigned JiurunCut machine model or operating recommendation.

Order field What L-19 should contain
Service destination Equipment asset reference and the exact component named in its maintenance documentation.
Approved requirement The complete lubricant specification and the document revision used by the reviewer.
Offered product Manufacturer, full product name and current technical-sheet reference.
Viscosity entry The stated ISO VG classification and the relevant property with its reference temperature.
Commercial supply Pack size, ordered quantity, delivery scope and agreed product-identification records.
Release record Who approved the exact product for that service destination, and when.

Use the same product designation on the quotation, purchase order and receipt record. If the vendor abbreviates a name, resolve it before ordering. Similar-looking descriptions can otherwise create a mismatch that the receiving team cannot settle.

Keep the specification accessible after delivery. A stores label should lead back to the reviewed documents, so a later replenishment order does not rely on someone’s memory of the original discussion.

Resolve a proposed substitution before it becomes a repeat order

A seller may offer a different product when the requested item is unavailable. Treat that as a new proposal. Retain the original requirement, the offered product’s complete technical sheet and the proposed reason for the change.

Ask the equipment provider or responsible maintenance reviewer to approve the named substitute for the named component. Have the response identify the product explicitly. A general statement such as “same grade” is not a complete product release record.

If approval is pending, show that status clearly in the purchasing workflow. Do not allow an unapproved alternative to become the stores default simply because it appeared on an earlier quotation.

Once a change is approved, update the linked order and maintenance records together. Keep the earlier decision traceable, including any stated restrictions. This is document control for the purchased item, not an instruction to mix fluids or change a machine’s service procedure.

Check the product identity at delivery

Compare the manufacturer’s product name, pack description and delivered quantity with the released order. Retain the identification or batch records that were agreed for the supply. A photograph of the container can support traceability when its label is readable.

Flag an unexplained name, pack or document change before releasing the item into the approved stock record. Send the discrepancy to the reviewer with the order reference and supplier’s response. Keep the receiving question focused on the actual delivered product.

For the wider service schedule, use the cutting-machine maintenance checklist. A purchasing review supports that schedule; it does not replace the equipment’s service instructions.

Short buyer answers

Does an ISO VG number select the oil for my saw?

No. Use the complete requirement for the specific component and obtain approval for the exact offered product. This guide assigns no oil grade to a JiurunCut model.

Should the viscosity temperature stay in the comparison?

Yes. Keep the property’s stated reference temperature and units beside the value so the reviewer can identify what the supplier actually reported.

Can I approve a replacement from its grade label alone?

Keep the label as one part of the review. Request the full product documentation and a written decision covering the exact substitute and service destination.

Make the maintenance inquiry easy to answer

When discussing a lubricant order for supplied equipment, send the machine identity, component reference, applicable manual entry and proposed product sheet through JiurunCut’s contact page. Explain whether you need the original requirement clarified or a named alternative reviewed.

A clear inquiry gives the technical team a specific decision to address. Keep the confirmed product, supporting documents and purchasing record together for the next replenishment.
