Encoder output types describe how the feedback signal is electrically presented to the receiving device. Open-collector, push-pull and differential line-driver are three labels a buyer may encounter in an incremental-encoder proposal.
The practical purchasing question is whether the offered output matches the documented receiving interface. Keep both references on the quotation review; a connector photograph or an encoder category name leaves that question open.
This guide follows a fictional enquiry with three abbreviated offers. It shows which information to request before the buyer treats any of them as an accepted component arrangement.

Check 1: read encoder output types in the product documentation
Same Sky’s comparison of common encoder output signals describes three electrical arrangements. In its open-collector explanation, a transistor drives the signal low; the high state releases that drive and requires an applicable pull-up arrangement.
The explainer describes push-pull outputs as actively driving both the high and low states. Its differential line-driver description uses complementary signals, with a receiving circuit responding to the difference between the pair.
These definitions introduce the output arrangement. Obtain the actual encoder and receiver specifications to establish voltage levels, connections and the supported combination for a particular machine.
Open-collector: identify the complete offered arrangement
A quotation should identify the actual output variant and how the proposed receiving arrangement is documented. Ask the supplier to show where the required interface provisions are specified.
If a provision is included in the receiving device, name that device and its supporting document. If another item is proposed, identify it as part of the supply scope. Do not let a missing detail disappear into a general statement that the encoder will work.
Push-pull: retain the exact product version
Ask for the complete reference, including any option suffix. Keep the supplier’s stated output specification alongside the corresponding receiving requirement.
An abbreviated description can be useful in an index, but the purchasing record should let a later reviewer identify exactly which item was proposed. Retain the data-sheet revision used in that review.
Differential line-driver: identify the receiving interface
Request the receiver reference and the applicable interface drawing with the encoder offer. The proposal should show the documented combination rather than relying on an attractive output label.
Keep the cable and connector references in that same package where they form part of the supplied arrangement. Ask which items are included and which remain the buyer’s responsibility.
Three fictional offers with three different open questions
Imagine a buyer receives three invented quotation lines. None gives a complete hardware reference or an accepted interface record.
| Fictional offer | Question to send back |
|---|---|
| A: open-collector output | Which identified receiving arrangement and interface provisions are included? |
| B: push-pull output | Which complete output variant and receiving requirements were reviewed? |
| C: differential line-driver | Which receiver, interface record and connection items are proposed? |
The buyer can retain all three labels without declaring a winner. The missing information concerns the actual offered combination.
When an answer arrives, replace the open question with the document reference and responsible reviewer’s disposition. Keep the original quotation attached so the reason for the clarification remains visible.
If the supplier changes the component while answering, record the change explicitly. A clarified label and a proposed replacement are different events in the purchasing file.

Check 2: request a complete interface record
Start with a short paired record: offered encoder reference on one side, receiving-device reference on the other. Link the applicable documents to each item.
Ask the supplier to identify the output specification and the input requirements used in its review. Keep the named fields and their units in the answer instead of reducing them to the word compatible.
Retain the approved interface drawing and relevant revision information. A connector reference belongs in the record, but it does not answer every electrical question by itself.
Identify the installed location and the cable arrangement included in the proposal. Provide the actual application information the supplier requests for its assessment rather than selecting a generic cable-length rule.
Our optical and magnetic encoder guide addresses the separate sensing-principle question. This review concerns the specified electrical output and receiver.
Keep the reported resolution definition in another named field. The encoder CPR meaning guide explains why a count abbreviation also needs its full definition.
For a new machine enquiry, ask which configuration records are included in the handover. Agree who supplies the final references when quotation options become the released arrangement.
Check 3: make the replacement scope explicit
A spare-parts request should identify the existing approved item, the machine and its component location. Attach the relevant service or parts record so the supplier can identify the requested scope.
State whether the request is for the original spare or an alternative for review. Keep the proposed alternative’s complete reference separate until the responsible reviewer accepts it.
If other items must change with the proposal, identify them in the offer. The buyer needs a clear supply boundary for the encoder, connections, receiving arrangement and supporting documentation.
Ask what review and verification the supplier requires for the actual change. Retain that answer with the substitution decision, and keep the released configuration available to the service team.
The broader absolute and incremental encoder guide covers position-reference questions. Changing a physical output label does not settle the complete feedback architecture.
Finished-part requirements remain in the cutting-job record. Describe the aluminum stock, drawing revision and required cuts when the enquiry concerns a complete machine purchase.

A clarification request that a supplier can answer directly
Please identify the complete encoder output variant and receiving-device reference for the quoted arrangement. Provide the applicable specification and interface records, identify the connection items included, and list any proposed changes from the existing approved configuration.
Add the quotation line, machine identity and relevant attachments. A focused request helps the supplier answer the actual document gap.
When reviewing the reply, check that each named item can be traced to its supporting record. Keep an unanswered field visible until the responsible party resolves it.
Buyer questions about the three labels
Does the same plug establish compatibility?
The review needs the documented output and receiving requirements as well as the connection reference.
Does an output label identify the sensing technology?
Record the sensing principle and electrical output as separate specifications of the offered product.
Can the quotation be accepted while the receiver is unidentified?
Ask the supplier and responsible reviewer to resolve that missing configuration information before accepting the proposed combination.
Put the feedback interface in a clear machine enquiry
Send JiurunCut the actual stock drawing and cutting requirements. Include the existing or proposed component records when encoder output types form part of the configuration review.
