For aluminum grinding blanks, more pre-machining is not automatically a better purchase. Keep the receiver-approved input until the changed piece and its receiving route are accepted together. A closer resemblance to the final part does not supply that acceptance.
Aluminum grinding blanks: path
Hypothetical purchasing example: a factory orders aluminum pins with a locating shoulder. Its plain blanks undergo through-feed centerless grinding before shoulder manufacture. The receiver has independently accepted the actual material and complete route for this fictional job.
JUNKER distinguishes continuous throughfeed travel from plunge grinding of profiled diameters.
A replacement supplier offers what it calls a more complete blank. The offered preform already has that feature. Its quotation repeats the same final diameter and length and says the factory will need less downstream work.

Shoulder
Workblades describes axial through-feed passage without obstructing shoulders, flanges or steps.
Not every shoulder blocks passage. The receiver must judge the actual candidate against its process; this article has not made that judgment. The buyer cannot transfer the former input’s acceptance to the new piece without that response.
The seller is pricing a completed feature, while the factory is buying an input for a particular next station. Those can be compatible, but the first fact does not establish the second. Matching the finished drawing therefore leaves the proposed handoff unresolved.
A feature required eventually is not necessarily required at this delivery point. In the factory’s original route, the later operation is planned, not accidentally omitted. Bringing it forward needs acceptance of the changed arrangement rather than simply deleting that later operation from the plan.

Order
The factory can retain the existing blank order while it considers the alternative. It need not reject the new supplier outright or declare the candidate useless. The comparison below keeps each purchase attached to the input actually considered by the receiver.
| Input | Passage | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Plain blank | Accepted | Retain |
| Preformed | Unconfirmed | Reassess |
A response covering only the finished component still leaves the question open. The receiver may already be able to deliver that final part under its current arrangement without having accepted the seller’s proposed starting state.
The old and new quotations can therefore remain separate even under the same finished-part number. Purchasing should not make the two inputs interchangeable merely by putting them under one description. The receiving commitment, not the shared name, determines whether substitution is accepted.

Route
If the receiver accepts a revised route, the buyer can compare its full purchase with the established one. That comparison includes what remains after delivery, not only the work the seller claims to have eliminated. No cost or production advantage follows from that claim alone.
If acceptance is still absent, preserve the original input for the original route. This is a hold on the changed purchase, not a direction to modify the material or adjust the receiving equipment. The candidate can remain a proposal without being treated as approved stock.
Illustrative buyer message for this fictional enquiry:
Please keep our accepted blank in the current order. Assess the proposed preform with its receiving method before treating it as a substitute; completing a feature earlier does not by itself confirm our next station’s acceptance.
For aluminum grinding blanks, the decision is not whether more preparation sounds useful. It is whether the changed delivery still belongs in an accepted production route. That keeps a claimed reduction in later work from silently creating an unresolved requirement at the next station.
