Aluminum Expanded Metal: Mesh Direction or Blank Size?

Specify aluminum expanded metal by the finished blank’s outer dimensions, the mesh direction and the required edge condition. A cut-to-size offer should address that combination. Matching the rectangle alone does not settle the diamond direction or promise closed diamonds around every border.

The same rectangle can require different mesh directions

Hypothetical purchasing case: a factory orders two batches of aluminum expanded-metal infill blanks with the same outer length and width. The requested mesh product is the same, but the diamond direction differs. These are invented requirements, not a customer order or a tested JiurunCut application.

McNICHOLS’ Expanded Metal Specifying & Ordering guide lists aluminum and asks separately for pattern direction, cut-to-size dimensions, shearing preference and additional edge work. It notes that LWD, the long way of design, follows sheet length for most of its inventory items. That describes its stock convention, not a default for every supplier or every finished blank.

Fictional infill-blank comparison — identical outer dimensions, different requested mesh directions; neither row is a supplier confirmation.
Requested batchMesh direction on the finished blankWhat still needs confirmation
A — same rectangular outlineThe long direction of the diamond pattern runs along the finished blank’s long side.Whether the named mesh can be supplied in this direction with the specified outline and edge conditions.
B — same rectangular outlineThe long direction of the diamond pattern runs along the finished blank’s short side.Whether the same mesh and outline can meet this different direction and the required conditions at each edge.

Mark the long and short sides on the finished-part view and add the requested mesh-direction arrow. Keep that arrow tied to the blank, not merely to the page orientation of a stock photograph. The A/B distinction records what the buyer wants; it makes no strength or safety claim about either direction.

A confirmation of outer dimensions alone leaves both direction requests unanswered. Ask the supplier to return the offered direction on each finished-panel view rather than assuming the parent sheet’s length answers the question.

Cut-to-size does not define the finished edges

Direct Metals’ Expanded Metal Glossary describes bond-side shearing along the centre of the connecting bonds and notes that camber can make it impractical. It describes end-random shearing as normally leaving open diamonds at the ends. Its side and end terms refer to the diamond’s long and short directions, respectively, not simply to whichever sheet edge a buyer calls an end.

Use those terms as a reason to identify the edge result on the actual blank. For A and B, ask the supplier to relate its shearing terminology to the marked mesh direction and the particular edges concerned. An answer for one edge is not automatically an answer for the rest.

If the buyer requires closed diamond borders, ask whether the outer dimensions, selected direction and requested borders can be supplied together. Do not turn a bond-shear preference or the phrase “cut to size” into a guarantee of closed diamonds on all four sides.

If the supplier proposes a different border or outline, keep it visible as an alternative requiring the buyer’s decision. Do not accept a size answer as an edge answer, or assume that a separate edge treatment is included without it being identified. This discussion specifies the delivered result, not how anyone should shear the material.

Choose who supplies the finished mesh blank

Buy whole sheets and arrange fabrication separately. Ask the material supplier to identify the actual stock product and its pattern direction. Have the intended fabricator confirm whether that input can produce the A and B blanks with their required edges before treating the whole-sheet order as a complete solution. The purchased sheets are starting material, not already finished infill panels.

Request finished blanks from the mesh supplier. Ask whether its offer covers the specified outer dimensions, direction and edge condition together for each batch. Identify any fabrication still left to another party. An offer for finished blanks is useful only to the extent that it describes the requested result; the label does not supply missing confirmations.

In the fictional case, suppose a reply says only that both batches will be cut to the drawing sizes. The buyer can return this focused request:

Please return the A and B finished-panel views with the mesh direction and edge condition you are offering. Confirm whether each combination meets the stated outer dimensions. Identify any unresolved direction or border requirement, and state whether your offer supplies the completed blank or leaves fabrication for our separate provider.

The response may confirm the requested combination, describe an alternative or leave part of it open. That is more useful than comparing two prices that cover different amounts of fabrication. Neither whole-sheet purchase nor finished-blank supply is inherently preferable; the buyer must account for the work still needed.

Assess the equipment application separately

Once the supplied material and required blank are identified, describe that specific task to the proposed equipment supplier. Send the actual mesh product, incoming form and dimensions, and the finished drawing with its direction and edge requirements. Ask whether the proposed process and configuration can address the task.

The glossary’s shearing descriptions do not establish that circular sawing supplies the same edge result. Do not treat sawing and shearing as interchangeable merely because both can be discussed as cutting. A mesh supplier’s fabrication offer also does not identify an appropriate saw, support arrangement or tool.

A general aluminum-cutting statement or an ordinary extrusion photograph is not evidence for this expanded-metal application. Keep material identity, finished-blank requirements and the equipment response separate until the relevant suppliers connect them. No cutting method, setup or sample result is prescribed here.
