Aluminum Foam: 2 Critical Meanings of “Open”

Treat “open” in an aluminum foam offer as incomplete until the supplier says whether it describes the internal structure, the supplied faces or both. Record the product’s structure separately from the condition of each face, and link both descriptions to the same identified sample.

Consider two fictional purchases: one buyer needs a specified cellular structure, while another wants exposed faces on a panel. Each receives an offer described only as “open aluminum foam.” The same wording leaves different requirements unanswered; these are invented situations, not customer cases.

When the aluminum foam requirement concerns structure

ERG Aerospace describes Duocel aluminum foam as a three-dimensional network of connected aluminum ligaments forming cells with open pores. This is a description of that named material’s structure, not just the appearance of a supplied face.

For a structure-led purchase, ask the material supplier to identify the exact product and the specification supporting its structural description. Keep the manufacturer’s terminology and document reference with the offer. Do not replace a structural requirement with a photograph labeled “open surface.”

If the intended part also has a functional requirement, state it separately and request relevant supplier evidence for the actual material and geometry. A photograph or surface label is not the answer to a question about flow through the material or another required property. This article specifies no performance value or test method.

When the requirement concerns the delivered faces

The older ALUSION brochure file labeled Feb2020, pages 4–5, distinguishes natural finishes from finishes with cells exposed on one or both sides. Its small-cell and large-cell examples describe removing surface skin to expose cells underneath. Here, the named finish addresses the supplied surface.

That historical terminology helps frame a question; it does not confirm current availability, dimensions or a fabrication method for your order. The ERG and ALUSION descriptions concern different products. They do not establish equivalent internal structures or interchangeable performance.

For a face-led purchase, identify which face must have the specified condition and what is required on the other face. Ask the supplier to describe what will arrive, rather than assuming a catalog photograph shows every delivered surface. Keep the product identity alongside that face requirement, even when appearance is the immediate reason for the inquiry.

Write the material description in two sentences

Use this format with confirmed information. The bracketed text identifies fields to replace; an unanswered field should say “not yet confirmed,” not borrow a value or description from another product.

Material/structure: The offered material is [manufacturer and product designation], with [supplier-confirmed structure description] referenced to [specification document and revision].

As supplied: The order covers [stock form and supplied dimensions], with Face A [confirmed delivered condition] and Face B [confirmed delivered condition], represented by [sample identifier and matched photograph references].

The first sentence identifies the material being purchased. The second describes its delivery condition. A complete answer to one does not complete the other. Keep the buyer’s requested condition distinguishable from what the supplier has actually confirmed.

Use existing drawing face names where available. Otherwise, Face A and Face B can be temporary communication labels on photographs or a sketch. They are not a universal material standard, a mounting orientation or directions for processing the sample.

Keep Face A and Face B on the same sample record

Ask for identified views of both faces of the same sample, with enough context to relate each view to the supplied piece. If the supplier submits different specimens, retain their separate identities; do not combine them into a single supposed sample.

Proposed record to accompany a material offer or downstream inquiry
Record elementBuyer/supplier entry
Sample identitySupplier and product identifier, sample reference, and the offer or document it represents.
Structure statementThe supplier’s definition and matching product specification. Keep an unconfirmed structure explicitly unknown.
Face AAn identified view and the supplier-confirmed as-delivered condition. Distinguish it from any requested but unconfirmed finish.
Face BThe corresponding view of the same specimen and its confirmed condition. Do not infer it from Face A.
Supply stageMaterial stock, prepared blank or assembled panel, as actually offered. Name additional layers only where they are present in the proposal.
Desired resultRequired geometry, faces to preserve and any separate functional requirement, linked to the relevant part drawing.
Unresolved changePlanned processing after the sample’s documented state, the responsible supplier and the confirmation still needed.

This is a communication record, not a quality certificate or acceptance protocol. A labeled photograph locates the face being discussed; it does not independently verify the entire structure or its properties. Keep material-document evidence and photographic observations identifiable.

Resolve the missing description without ranking brands

Continuing the fictional comparison: one reply names a product and its structure document but leaves both delivered faces unspecified. The material sentence can record that answer; the face sentence still needs the supplier’s response.

Another reply identifies both face conditions on an example sample but does not establish the required structure of the offered product. The face record is more specific, but the material sentence remains incomplete. Ask whether that sample represents the exact offered product rather than treating its appearance as the missing specification.

Do not declare the offers equivalent because both use “open,” or reject a material solely because its photograph differs. Return the specific unanswered requirement:

Please define “open” for the product in your offer. Separate the structure statement from the as-delivered condition of Face A and Face B, and connect both to the same product document and identified sample. State which requirements are confirmed and which still need clarification, including any processing proposed after the sample’s current state.

The resulting reply should show what is specified, what delivery condition is proposed and what remains undecided. It does not need to turn one supplier’s vocabulary into another’s classification.

Pass the complete material description to the next supplier

If the inquiry concerns cut blanks rather than full stock, send the identified material, supplied form and dimensions, Face A/Face B record and required finished geometry. Ask which supply stage the proposal covers and what faces must be preserved. Do not assume the sample already represents the finished blank.

A material supplier’s fabrication statement does not establish that a particular saw can perform your operation. Confirm the actual supply route and request an application-specific response before selecting equipment.
