Encoder Index Pulse: 3 Critical Reference Checks

An encoder index pulse identifies a reference event on a separate channel. For an incremental rotary encoder, it can mark one location each revolution. That repeating event needs a clearly documented relationship to the machine’s reference.

Ask which encoder and Z-channel option the offer includes, then ask how the receiving system uses that signal. Keep a component reference mark separate from the accepted position of the complete machine.

Follow the reference from component to system
  1. Identify the actual channel.
  2. Understand the repeating reference.
  3. Retain the receiving-system explanation.

1. Identify the encoder index pulse in the offered component

Dynapar’s incremental and absolute encoder white paper describes an optional index or Z channel. It produces one pulse per revolution in a rotary encoder, or a pulse at a specific position in a linear encoder.

The signal can help identify a location at startup. Read that description with the identified component and the actual system documentation.

Confirm the complete component reference

Retain the encoder’s full part number and option information. Ask the supplier to point to the data-sheet entry and signal diagram covering the offered index channel.

Keep the manufacturer’s channel name visible. If the quotation calls the signal a marker or reference, request the matching label in the component documentation.

Compare replacement proposals as separately identified items. A product-family heading does not establish that every offered option contains the same channel arrangement.

Keep resolution and reference fields separate

The A/B resolution entry and the Z-channel description should have their own headings in the comparison. One describes a stated feedback quantity; the other identifies a reference signal.

Our encoder CPR guide explains why counts and cycles need complete definitions. Do not treat a high abbreviated resolution number as the answer to a missing index-channel question.

Ask for the drawing or timing diagram belonging to the actual part reference. A generic waveform pasted into a proposal should be identified as generic unless the supplier establishes its applicability.

2. Understand what the repeating reference can identify

A once-per-revolution reference repeats as the rotary shaft turns. In a mechanism that can make several turns, the reference description therefore needs its documented system context.

Ask what the signal means in the offered arrangement: a shaft reference, an event used in a specified sequence or another expressly documented function. Record the supplier’s explanation without assigning a machine coordinate from the channel name.

An original fictional travel example

Imagine a mechanism with an ideal movement of 5 mm per shaft revolution. Suppose its rotary index event occurs at the start of the illustrated interval and repeats once each complete revolution.

In this invented relationship, successive index occurrences correspond to ideal travel positions of 0, 5 and 10 mm. The repeated event alone does not tell the reviewer which of those occurrences the system is meant to use.

Occurrence Illustrated travel position
Starting reference event 0 mm
After one full revolution 5 mm
After two full revolutions 10 mm

The numbers illustrate repetition under explicitly invented assumptions. They are not a JiurunCut specification, measured positioning result or instructions for establishing a real axis reference.

Ask how the required occurrence is identified

Request the supported system explanation from the equipment supplier. Retain the applicable controller and arrangement reference with that answer.

If a proposal gives only “automatic home,” ask what documented reference arrangement that label describes. The explanation should let the responsible reviewer connect the named component to the proposed machine function.

A rotary reference and a linear reference need their own component descriptions. Do not transfer the once-per-revolution wording onto a linear scale whose document specifies a position mark.

3. Retain the receiving-system explanation

Keep the encoder documentation beside the receiving-system reference in the quotation file. Ask which documented function receives and uses the Z channel in the offered configuration.

Have the responsible supplier identify any required channel characteristics in its component review. Retain the approved data-sheet and interface references rather than inferring compatibility from a similar connector.

Use a clear record for each reference

Name the component reference mark, system position reference and job datum separately where they appear in the proposal. Ask how the documented arrangement connects them.

Our absolute and incremental encoder guide covers broader feedback and startup questions. This article focuses on the repeating index event and its stated role.

If a component or controller changes during quotation, request the revised explanation. A previous approval should stay attached to the configuration it actually reviewed.

Review a supplier-led demonstration

Ask the supplier to propose an appropriate demonstration and its record for the specified reference function. Retain the configuration, relevant document and observed outcome with the agreed acceptance review.

Keep finished-part evidence under its own requirement. A reference-event demonstration and a dimensional inspection answer different questions in a machine purchase.

Use the equipment’s applicable operating and service procedures for actual setup. This purchasing guide does not provide wiring, live signal tests or a homing sequence.

A concise request for quotation clarification

Please identify the encoder and Z-channel option in the offer. State what its reference event identifies and how the documented receiving system uses it. Include the applicable component diagram and machine reference documentation.

Add the quotation line, machine arrangement and document revision to the request. Ask the supplier to return the clarification with the updated offer so procurement and service retain the same explanation.

For a replacement request, include the existing component identity and relevant service record. Keep any alternative item as a separate proposal until the responsible supplier reviews its full compatibility.
