Dynamic vs Kinematic Viscosity: 3 Critical Oil Checks

Dynamic vs kinematic viscosity matters when an oil quotation arrives with a short property summary. Read the quantity and units before comparing the value with the equipment requirement.

A fictional purchasing worksheet illustrates the problem. One attachment lists kinematic viscosity of 50 mm²/s. Another lists dynamic viscosity of 40 mPa·s. A reviewer has entered both numbers in a column labelled viscosity.

That column has hidden the distinction. The review starts by restoring the original property headings. A larger number in the abbreviated worksheet does not, by itself, identify a suitable replacement oil.

Start with the full property entry

  • Name the reported viscosity quantity.
  • Retain the units and stated conditions.
  • Use the applicable density record for a conversion.

Dynamic vs kinematic viscosity: give each field its own name

Anton Paar’s viscometry guide lists dynamic viscosity in Pa·s or mPa·s, with 1 cP equal to 1 mPa·s. It lists kinematic viscosity in m²/s or mm²/s, with 1 cSt equal to 1 mm²/s.

The guide defines kinematic viscosity as dynamic viscosity divided by density, with the material parameters taken at the same temperature and pressure.

Keep these labels in the purchasing form. Write the complete property name rather than asking the next reader to infer it from a unit abbreviation.

If a supplier sends only a value and an informal description, request the technical sheet containing the entry. Preserve the original heading, stated conditions and explanatory notes.

Read the document’s product identity at the same time. A clear unit cannot resolve a sheet that belongs to a different offered item.

Keep a published typical property separate from a specified purchase requirement and from a result measured on a delivered sample. Give each its own purpose in the review.

Follow the fictional calculation without approving an oil

For the worksheet exercise, suppose the dynamic entry is accompanied by an invented density of 800 kg/m³. Assume both refer to the same fictional material at the same stated temperature and pressure.

Inputs and result for the fictional calculation
Field Example entry
Dynamic viscosity 40 mPa·s = 0.040 Pa·s
Density 800 kg/m³
Calculated kinematic viscosity 0.000050 m²/s = 50 mm²/s

Divide 0.040 Pa·s by 800 kg/m³ to obtain 0.000050 m²/s. Multiplying by 1,000,000 gives 50 mm²/s.

The arithmetic explains how two different numerical entries can describe related quantities. It does not establish that the two offered products in a real quotation are equivalent.

The values in this exercise are invented. They are not observations from a JiurunCut machine, an oil recommendation or a specified operating range.

For a real conversion, retain the actual product record and the documented inputs. Identify which values were supplied and which were calculated.

If a calculation uses density copied from another product, return to the missing input. A completed spreadsheet cell is not evidence that the input belongs to the material being reviewed.

If the original requirement asks for kinematic viscosity, keep that requirement intact in the final comparison. A converted value should retain the method and input references that explain how it was obtained.

Check the conditions before completing the calculation

Read the conditions attached to each property entry. For this conversion, the cited guide requires dynamic viscosity and density at the same temperature and pressure.

Ask the reporting party to resolve missing or mismatched conditions. Do not silently combine values from unrelated rows merely because they appear on the same product sheet.

State the condition required by the equipment documentation in a dedicated field. That lets the supplier identify which entry responds to the request.

Keep a test result’s reporting condition separate from the machine’s actual operating description. The data-sheet value and the application review have different roles in the enquiry.

If the source document contains several temperatures, copy the selected row with its heading. Avoid taking a viscosity value from one row and a density value from another without the applicable technical basis.

This guide provides no temperature-correction method or instrument setup procedure. Retain the responsible laboratory’s method and the applicable product instructions for actual measurements.

Ask a question the supplier can answer precisely

A short request can still identify the missing field. Name the offered product, the document revision and the row that needs clarification.

For example: please confirm whether the quoted viscosity entry is dynamic or kinematic, retain its units and conditions, and identify the technical sheet supporting it.

If a conversion is proposed, ask for the density entry that applies to the same material and conditions. Keep the supplied response with the original calculation.

When the enquiry concerns a measured sample, identify that sample and the corresponding report. Ask the testing party to clarify the reported method rather than describing the result as a brochure value.

Give the supplier the complete equipment requirement. A reply confirming one viscosity field should not be treated as approval of every other aspect of a candidate oil.

Record the resolution in the controlled review. If a field remains missing, name the unresolved question so it cannot disappear behind an apparently complete quotation.

Connect the property record to the approved purchase

For a maintenance item, identify the installed component and the relevant lubrication point. Attach the controlled instruction supporting the requested product or specification.

Our NLGI grade and base oil viscosity guide addresses a separate grease-data comparison. Keep the complete manufacturer description when reviewing a product with several property fields.

For a cutting-process fluid, describe the actual application arrangement. Our aluminum saw-lubrication guide organizes the equipment and approved-fluid questions.

Keep the purchasing decision linked to the authorized product requirement. If an alternative is offered, retain the complete proposal and the responsible technical review before changing the order.

At delivery, check the received product identity against the released order and accompanying records. Resolve an unexplained document or container mismatch through the supplier.

If a service enquiry accompanies an aluminum cutting job, also include the stock drawing and required finished-part condition. Keep an observed cutting issue separate from assumptions about its cause.

Three quick answers for the review meeting

Are cP and cSt interchangeable unit labels?

They label different viscosity quantities. Retain the original quantity and use the applicable density information if conversion is required.

Does a correct conversion approve a replacement oil?

Obtain the responsible review against the complete equipment and product requirements.

What belongs with a converted value?

Keep the original entries, conditions, input references and calculation beside the result.

Keep the fluid requirement clear in the cutting enquiry

Send JiurunCut the stock drawing and actual equipment or process question. Keep dynamic vs kinematic viscosity clear in any supporting document and attach the approved product requirements relevant to the enquiry.
